Was born in Ottawa, Canada on November 18, 1939, just after the start of WW2.Atwood realized she wanted to write professionally when she was 16 and just hasn't stopped.

Since 1961 Atwood has published, 18 books of poetry, 18 novels, 11 books of non-fiction, nine collections of short fiction, eight children's books, and two graphic novels, and a number of small press editions of both poetry and fiction.

At the last count, Atwood had been awarded over 35 international awards for her writing and activism.
She also holds 24 honorary degrees including from Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge as well as both a BA and MA from her student days.
Not bad or someone who did not attend school full time until they were 12 years of age.
Despite all this, Atwood is best known for her massive hit 'The Handmaids Tale'She has recently burned and auctioned off a special copy of this book as a protest.
