Delia Owens (born 1949) is an American author and zoologist.  Her debut novel Where the Crawdads Sing topped The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2019 and The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2020 for 32 non-consecutive weeks.

"'Where the Crawdads Sing" is a coming-of-age story  and a murder mystery.  Kya Clark is abandoned by her family members, effectively left to raise herself in the swamps of Barklay Cove on the Carolina Coast. After being abandoned by her family, Kya is reluctant to form new relationships and become close to people.

What is 'Where the Crawdads sing' about?

"The main themes in Where the Crawdads Sing are the lasting damage of abandonment, the impact of trauma on relationships, and the constancy of nature in life. Whereas, Where the Crawdads Sing is fiction, it echoes aspects of the author's life and is causing some problems for Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift has provided the theme tune to Where the Crawdads Sing and Delia Owens replied: '“Dear Taylor, thank you for the stirring yet sensitive theme song you wrote and sang for the Crawdads movie. I cannot imagine a more perfect tribute to Kya’s story than your voice drifting forever through the marsh.”'

The problem for Taylor Swift supporting the movie, is that Delia and her previous husband Mark, are on record after their conservation work in Africa, referring to Africa as “"the Dark Continent,” and in their book Secrets of the Savanna, Delia and Mark called for human population control across the continent. Some have also noted that though Where the Crawdads Sing is fictional, its themes and values echo aspects of Delia Owens life.
