Book Review of The Dreamers – Karen Thompson Walker

Why should you read this book?

This is such a hyped book so I was especially excited about it. I did my best to not let myself be affected by my expectations, though.

The Dreamers tells the story of a town that’s suddenly hit by a mysterious illness that locks people in perpetual sleep, triggering unique and splendid dreams.

There were some things that I really enjoyed about this book and others that didn’t work for me. I loved that Walker didn’t turn The Dreamers into a sci-fi book. She definitely could have taken that direction by exploring the disease itself.

But the author chose to focus on the dreams and the characters. Therefore, I believe this book leans more towards literary fiction which is, as you know, my favorite genre. On the other hand, by not truly exploring the disease, I ended up not understanding why and where this virus came from which got on my nerves.

In spite of the fact that this book is well-written, I just couldn’t genuinely connect to the characters. The Dreamers follows the story of many people and certain chapters are way too short to allow you the possibility of a deeper connection.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and I recommend it to you if you are a fan of novels like Blindness by José Saramago or if you like books that portray mysterious and strange scenarios. What I don’t recommend is the audiobook. I was happy to read on Goodreads that I am not alone on this one. It will put you to sleep!

Summary of The Dreamers

Imagine a world where sleep could trap you, for days, for weeks, for months…

Karen Thompson Walker’s second novel tells the mesmerising story of a town transformed by a mystery illness that locks people in perpetual sleep and triggers extraordinary, life-altering dreams.

One night in an isolated college town in the hills of Southern California, a first-year student stumbles into her room and falls asleep. She sleeps through the morning, into the evening. Her roommate cannot rouse her.

Neither can the paramedics, nor the perplexed doctors at the hospital. When a second girl falls asleep, and then a third, panic takes hold of the college and spreads to the town. A young couple tries to protect their newborn baby as the once-quiet streets descend into chaos. Two sisters turn to each other for comfort as their survivalist father prepares for disaster.

Written in luminous prose, The Dreamers is a breathtaking and beautiful novel, startling and provocative, about the possibilities contained within a human life if only we are awakened to them.
